ServerSideSeminar

The Servlet/JSP seminar will take the form of a hands-on seminar, 3-5 days (please state if you have a preference), which will be based on the TomCat webserver. It will require a sound knowledge of Java, at least a year of full-time development experience.

It will deal with the theory and practice of issues such as:

• What are servlets and how do they compare with other server side technologies like CGI/Perl?
• What are the classes in the Servlet API and what functions do they perform?
• What is the difference between GET and POST, and how do servlets handle them?
• How do servlets handle HEAD requests? How do you handle multithreading in Servlets?
• How do you handle cookies and sessions using Servlets?
• What is JSP, how does it work?
• How different is it from Servlets?
• When should you use JSP and when Servlets?
• How much Java is too much when embedded in a JSP page?
• What are JSP tags and how do you use them?
• What sort of design patterns and architectures are commonly used with JSPs and servlets?

How to create custome JSP Tags? Tag Libraries?

What are Struts and how do you use them?

How to access database information?

How to use Java Beans?

Please explain why is there a need to reinvent the wheel ?
Perl is much, much superior for web and sys admin tasks than Java which in my opinion is good only for embeding in web browsers and cross platform applications. Thats it.

How to identify the particular variable type (primitive datatypes)in Java at run time.Otherwise how could it be done if a variable of primitive type has to be identified.Please explain with an example.

I'm from a procedural COBOL/Fortran maintenance background and it seems that it is really hard to tell what an OO package of classes is really doing. With late binding an all the classes might be acting like an order entry program or they might be acting like an accounts receivable program. Do you know of any aids that might tell how the classes are fitting together and what function they are currently performing with this invokation of main. Help! What are they doing? This is especially important since program are read a lot more than they are changed or written and if it is very difficult to read them you will loose any productivity you gain making them easier to write.

I have a question , I am generating XML nodes using a java class.The nodes are three drop downs.This is converted into html using xsl.The second drop down should be based on the first drop down selection and the third drop down selection should be based on the first and second selection.Hope you reply immediately..

I´m trying to put an applet to handle a formular
because the amount of date is huge and the page is
very slow (and the data is growing and growing).
At the beginning was ok I didn´t have so many records to
manage but now the html-page is now about 8000 lines!!

I don´t want to reload the page after a selection. This could be a solution: after a selection to send a query to the database and reload the page (instead of having all the data in the page) but it doesn´t look good to reload the page after any new selection (the user make at least 5 selections before submiting the form).

So now I am trying to move all the data to an applet, where
I can handle all dynamically and without performance problems (beside all the nice view-features an applet has comparing it with HTML). I don´t have problems with compatibility or such (applet, JVM, JRE, etc.) so no problems using applets.

Any idea how can I insert a applet in the struts model?
