Project Residencies in Crested Butte
Expert assistance
in an exceptional environment
A project residency is a chance for you to do offsite development at high
elevation, with the consulting assistance of Bruce Eckel. Have your
thought patterns become rigid and constrained? Break out of your box and away
from the office in the wonderful atmosphere of Crested Butte, Colorado. This quiet and stunningly beautiful mountain town
provides the ideal location to work and get perspective on your project (much of
"Thinking in Java" was created here).
Project residencies are a minimum of two weeks long (but may be extended as
necessary to fit your needs) and cost $500/week. They consist of a daily 15-
minute morning "checkin" (typically at Camp4 Coffee) together with other
participants. Here, you relate what you've accomplished, what you plan to do,
and any obstacles you have (this meeting is modeled after the 15-minute "stand-
up" meetings from some of the agile methodologies).
Every 3 days there is a 1-hour project review where you go into more depth
about what you are working on. This may include (depending on where your project
is) architectural reviews, design reviews, or code reviews.
The programming language for your project may be Java, C++, Python, or C#.
Your project is typically the one you are working on for your company, but it
may also be an individual project, such as one you plan to open-source. If you
desire and have no current project, Bruce may have or can develop a project for
you to work on.
If your project is proprietary, appropriate measures can be taken (NDAs,
private meetings, etc.).
Project residencies may coincide with periods where seminars are taking
place, so meeting times may be adjusted accordingly. If other teachers are in
Crested Butte during your project residency they may also choose to participate.
Project residencies may take place from the beginning of June through the end
of October, although some weeks may be unavailable. Space is limited.
The fee covers only the participation in the program. You are responsible for
all other costs (transportation, lodging, food, etc.). Note that Crested Butte
has alernative low-cost lodging (including a Hostel and Camping; also be sure to
shop around, and ask the more typical lodging options like lodges and bed-and-breakfasts if they have
discounts for longer stays).
To apply, send the following information to Bruce@EckelObjects.com:
- The dates you wish to attend.
- A brief description of the project you plan to work on (topic, scope,
programming language), if you have one.
